Rehab Techniques in Oncology



The Rehab Techniques in Oncology training program developed by Jodi Steele is a comprehensive 2-level program that teaches qualified physiotherapists, kinesiologists, occupational therapists and exercise physiologists the specifics of cancer rehab. 

Course Description

 

Rehab Techniques in Oncology Level 1

Rehab Techniques in Oncology Level 2

Audience Health care professionals, and students, in the fields of physiotherapy, kinesiology, exercise physiology and occupational therapy who have not previously worked with cancer patients. 
The training will also benefit experienced professionals who wish in update their knowledge and skills. 
Health care professionals in the fields of physiotherapy, kinesiology, exercise physiology and occupational therapy who have at least three (3) years of experience working with oncology patients, as well as those who have completed Rehab Techniques in Oncology Level 1.
Goal To equip health care professionals who have minimal experience in oncology with a foundation to understand the disease, its effects and treatments. 

Level 1 covers the basic principles of exercise and its benefits specific to cancer patients. 
To provide participants with an advanced understanding of the medical management of cancer (including chemotherapy, radiation and bone marrow transplants) and its impact on rehab needs and techniques as well as an understanding of complex cancers or metastases as they pertain to rehab or exercise practices and practical, hands-on experience for myofascial release and scar techniques through extensive demonstration and case studies.
Key Topics:  Cancer Provides an overview of cancer, including:
  • Staging (1-4)
  • Treatments (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery)
  • Common side effects (fatique, lymphedema, sleep and depression)
  • Psychosocial dimensions of cancer
Provides an in-depth overview of medical interventions in oncolgoy, including:
  • Biology therapy
  • Antiangiogenic therapy
  • Surgery
  • Radiation
  • Chemotherapy
  • Hormone therapy
Key Topics:  Rehabilitation Describes common rehabilitation issues, exercises and manual techniques for thirteen (13) types of cancer including:  breast, colorectal, lung, ovarian, prostate, melanoma, sarcoma, leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, brain, spinal cord, head and neck. Focused on complex issues, Level 2 explores at length the rehabilitation needs, exercises and manual techniques for specific cancers including:  breast, hematological disorders, lung, gastrointestinal, melanoma as well as techniques for lymphedema management. 
    Participants will work together in small groups to develop and implement a rehab program based on a case study. 
    Level 2 also explores the measurement of pain and how it affects rehabilitation, and includes an interactive discussion on exercise parameters for cancer patients.

  • The Rehab Techniques Professionals Workbook
  • A Lymphadema manual
  • A reference list of sources cited throughout the course

Participants will be involved in an interactive analysis of relevant case studies and topics.
