Support Training Program

Being present and attentive to a patient’s stories and crisis can be challenging for professionals and volunteers alike. Through Wellspring’s Support Training Program participants will learn the skills needed to provide effective support to people living with cancer and their family members.

Wellspring offers two fully customizable versions of the Support Training Program one for professionals and the other for volunteers who provide support to cancer patients or their family members.  Participants will gain practical skills to provide effective support and communication, while maintaining boundaries and care of themselves as the supportive listener.

Wellspring has successfully adapted and delivered its Support Training Program to a variety of organizations, including St. Michael’s Hospital, South Riverdale Community Health Centre and the Odette Cancer Centre.  The program is customized in consultation with the organization receiving the training program to ensure that the organization’s goals, policies and service delivery challenges are addressed.

Upon completion of the Support Training Program participants will leave with:

  • The skills to effectively communicate and actively listen
  • The skills to determine and create boundaries for the support care role
  • The ability to identify compassion fatigue and apply practical self-care tools
