Carol – Member, Odette House and Wellspring Westerkirk House at Sunnybrook
Carol first came to Wellspring in 2002. A very independent individual, her friend had to encourage her to visit Wellspring. After her first surgery for breast cancer, she joined the Breast Cancer Support Group. Carol says that she felt she could handle the physical toll of her diagnosis and treatment, but realized it was the emotional side that was most difficult. Carol had called another organization for telephone counselling and had spoken to and made a strong connection with one of the counsellors. She was pleasantly surprised when she arrived for the Breast Cancer Support Group at Wellspring to find the same counsellor was the Program Leader. “Her leadership was outstanding,” she remembers. “She let me talk…she was terrific”.
Since her initial visit, Carol has had four more surgeries and continues to come to Wellspring to access programs which provide practical support and information. As a participant of the Cancer Exercise program, she says “It’s like having a personal trainer”. Carol has also been very interested in programs focusing on nutrition and cooking, and plans to keep an eye on the exciting nutrition programs being offered at Wellspring Westerkirk House at Sunnybrook for more interactive cooking demonstrations and presentations. “I feel more comfy in the kitchen. Nutrition is definitely important to me.”
